Derek was competing for the medal in the 400 meter race. Less than half-way through, he ripped a hamstring muscle and fell to the ground in agony. While the rest of the runners moved past him, Derek managed to get to his feet and began struggling to move forward.
Then something caught the attention of the television cameras. Jim, his father, ran past security and onto the race track. At first Derek shrugged him away, saying, "I'm going to finish the race." Jim said to his son, "We've started everything together. We'll finish this together."
He put his arm around his son and held him as they crossed the finish line together. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause; it has become a classic moment in sports.
This story reminds me of the many times I fell short and the Father have picked me up and carried me through. Whenever, you look back at the sands in life and see only one set of foot prints know that Jesus has picked you up and carried you through.
This Father’s Day reminds me that as Fathers we are more than just a child’s daddy. Being a Father is much more than paying child support. Our children need to know, believe, and understand that when they stumble and fall or fail. As their fathers we will be there to pick them up and carry them in the physical as Jesus will carry them through in the spirit. But our children will never see this if we are not standing in the place that God has ordained for us to have.
Men our challenge is to take our rightful place in the home that God always intended u to have. He would have not given Jesus an earthly father if he had not decided that he too needed a father to guide and direct him.
It is a challenge to all fathers to recognize the profound influence they have on their children. Psychotherapists today are saying that both parents are vitally important to the stable development of their children - the mother's input is invaluable in the formative pre-adolescent years but the father's most important influence is at adolescence. In pre-industrial cultures fathers worked alongside their sons and taught them their trade. The father led the adolescent son into manhood and the book titled 'Absent Fathers Lost Sons' addresses this issue. Adolescent daughters long to hear from their fathers that they are beautiful and loved. In fact a girl's choice of partner and satisfaction in marriage is often directly related to the relationship she had with her father.
Men stand up and be FATHERS! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! AMEN.
